Dragged into Turbolasers Episode 48: More details on Blackstone Fortress

A navigator model!

We spend the episode discussing Warhammer Quest Blackstone Fortress. While most of the episode consists of us analyzing each of the models contained in the boxed set, we also talk about the game itself and Games Workshop’s efforts at making better board games.

Watch this episode on Twitch with pictures!

  1. Excellent as always guys. I am definitely don't need another board game but as usual you all have peaked my interest. I will say that the game looks very thought out and worth buying for more than just the miniatures, which is definitely a step in the right direction.

    1. Yeah, I think it is a step in the right direction. Making the board game a selling point and not just the models is good.

  2. Good stuff as always, gentlemen. I feel like I got some cool extra content with the Twitch feed... though the ads were a bit shocking at some points! I mostly agree with your observations about the figures--the Chaos marines are pretty disappointing in particular, but there are some very cool things in the box. I'll probably pick it up at some point though I was planning to get Titanicus and I haven't been able to afford that yet(!). The gameplay side looks like it could be interesting though I have mixed feelings about the Fantasy Flight influence. In some ways FF games are very annoying, I feel; but that's another topic!

    1. Thanks for giving Twitch a try; I am glad the video added something :D

Sorry to hear about the ads though, it is not something I experienced. At first I thought it might be because I use an Ad Blocker extension in Chrome, but looking into it further, it seems that Twitch started to put ads in that even ad blocker cannot get around. Furthermore, it seems since I have an Amazon Prime account the ads are removed, but this feature is being removed soon it seems... I may need to experiment with some software that allows the streams to occur on both Twitch and YouTube, so people can watch them on whatever platform they like best. I know YouTube has adds too, but maybe they are not as frequent? I will have to test it. Thanks for the input!

What aspects of FFG do you not like? I find sometimes they get carried away with too many tokens to represent things, rather than creating streamlined rules that minimize the need for them. Also, they love making custom dice, thinking that they will hide the fact that many of their games rely too much of random elements. I feel they consistently make good games, but rarely are they ground-breaking.

    2. Cheers. Ads are fine (nothing is free) but I wasn't expecting it the first few times and they just came in very loud compared to the volume of your feed. It was a little bit more disruptive than youtube but not much. I find twitch hard to use though, and absolutely impossible to use on my phone. That might just be me though.

As for FFG, the only game I have played in depth is Star Wars Armada but I have played some others. The rule books are very very poorly laid out and confusing. To the point a friend and I played for over 6 months playing once per month or more without ever realising it had a system of points values and a standard amount of points per list...not to mention the missions! I only ever found out what we were supposed to be doing by reading online articles. I don't mid the tokens or cards too much but I dislike that you have to keep buying new products to keep up. For this reason I don't like what GW is doing with necromunda and kill team (and 40K), where you have to keep buying a new book every few months to keep up with the rules. I bought kill team because I thought it was great they finally released a game with the rules all in one book...only to find out a couple of months later I now have to buy Kill Team Commanders (or whatever) lol! it never ends!
