Dragged into Turbolasers Episode 33: Necromunda impressions with Eli Parsons

The Orlocks are soon here...

In this episode we are joined with our good friend Eli Parsons, who listeners may know from the excellent Dragons of Phaeton blog and who created some awesome NPC characters for the Curse of the Alabaster collaborative event last year. In the first half of the episode we talk about how Necromunda has changed with the new edition. In the second half we discuss some of the Necromunda models, with particular focus on the newly revealed Orlock gang. Be sure to follow Eli @totradus on Instagram and his blog the Dragons of Phaeton

  1. After a slightly down ending, we can at least all have a good laugh at the male Hive Scum's right arm. It's hilarious.

p.s. Still an interesting listen, and thanks for the link to Eli's blog, haven't seen that before.

    1. Yeah, sorry for being so negative, but it is just a pretty big disappointment with the orlocks. I would rather be critical about the models, such that they can be improved in tbe future, because they certainly have the talent. Thanks for listening as always!

    2. Don't worry I wasn't complaining about the negativity. On the whole the podcast was very positive about the new game. I'm looking forward to throwing out the gangs and fiddling about with profiles for various warbands that are cluttering up my desk, boxes and brain.

    3. I certainly agree with you there. This new version of Necromunda seems to be a great streamlined and improved version of the game that will be idea for games of Inq28 and such.

  3. Good episode, as usual. I have to admit I thought it was a bit rich to be asked shell out $150AUD for the boxed game plus immediately another $50AUD for the rest of the rules. I don't think we'll bother... we don't have enough regular players for a campaign, don't have enough terrain, the miniatures aren't inspiring enough to bother, and we've just shelled out a lot of cash to get going with 8th edition 40K...

I agree with most of your comments about the Orlocks, though I was surprised: I thought for sure GW would win you over with the folding stock but it wasn't to be!

I think overall the main issue with the new Necromunda models is that they're just not as good as the originals. Not even close. And, I'm a bit surpised to hear that the Eschers are so small (or at least their heads), that seems a very poor choice... though personally if I pick up any of the Escher models I will replace the heads with ones from Statuesque minis anyway.

Sorry to keep blathering on, but I agree it is a massive shame that none of the other gangs will get female members, though you didn't mention the female Hive Scum from Forgeworld. I thought it was odd right from the start that if they were updating the Eschers they would still go with the bikinis and high heels. I mean, I have massive nostalgia for that stuff but if you're updating the models anyway... I mean come on - It's 2017 now, 20 years later, we can do better for our sisters!

    1. Yeah, the price is quite high. I was hoping it would be closer to Blood Bowl's price, considering the similar release structure. Most of their previous boxed games gave you a "deal" per say; not this one.

While I appreciate a folding stock was added, the rest of the design is not great, sort of one step forward two steps back. I think you are right that the new models are not really better than the old ones, and certainly not taking into account that we are not back in 1995. I would have loved to see the Escher design toned down a little, while still maintaining some of the flair. But more than anything I was just hoping for some nice heads to use in our own conversions, but we didn't even get that. Quite a shame...

    2. I sort of love (loathe???) also how he's raised the rifle up to aim it, but still hasn't unfolded the stock! Just like a Star Wars stormtrooper.:)

    3. Ha ha, yeah. Classic. There is clearly very little understanding of what a stock is for.
